Vallée d’Obermann is one of Liszt’s greatest works. It was inspired by Senancour’s book ‘Obermann’ which is set in Switzerland. Obermann is a solitary, melancholy character, who searches for a lonely valley in which to live. The piece is dark and brooding but ends in an exuberant pean of joy
